Weaver Chaptor 5

  • Teacher education does not focus on popular culture
  • Given time cultural studies will be as big in education as literature
  • Paul Willis- study on working class males in england-How do they formulate their own culture and resist the dominant culture? He found males saw school as one of the major inst. that reproduced the status quo. even though the men realized this, by rebelling, they gave the ruling class exactly what they wanted.
  • Leslie Roman and Linda Christian-Smith study-established the roots of cultural studies in education-Becoming Feminine-an alternative to male dominated discourse-offered their own interpretation of cultural studies that did not subdue women

    • The strongest value instilled by the corporation is the will to consume.  Ones identity is shaped by consumption. corporations use education to sell, and advertise in schools.
      • kids as young as two can have their tastes shaped,
      • coporations like to build brand loyalty early.
    • Consuming Children by Jane Kenway and Elizabeth Bullen-they chart the ways in which young people have been recast as untapped markets and the school curricula is seen as the first peublic relations opport. Taco bell, BK, and Pizza hut and coke have made inroads into schools.
    • Exonn has created an envirnmental curriculum
    • Schools are not innocent in this, they take gifts to save money at the expense of the child
    • They offer action, kids can retake their schools public space, and enter a dialoge
    • cyberflaneur, where kids can interact across states or nations to experience different cultures, to change their attitudes
    • Peter McLaren, sees consumerism as a fomr of predatory cutlure. to counteract the seductiveness of predatory culture mclaren seeks to create a critical pedagogy tha permits students to become actores in history rather than passive conduits. If they dont assert themselves others are ready to define them
  • Media LiteracyPrograms in Schools
    • How do images shape our reality
    • 1.schools should offer students the opportunity to critique multimedia sources so they can see houw imaes construc reality and understand how they can critique images
    • 2.schools should offer media sources as a supplement to written docs.
      • instead of just having them watch a movie and read a book, students should also learn how each medium is different and how each medium presents reality****
    • Robert Rosenstone, leading scholar comparing modern media, tv, with past media, books-
      • film cannot tell the story the same way, its too different
      • both are not the past, but merely represent the past
      • main point, is that while movies are limited to 2 hours, books have no space limit to tell a story.
      • film makers use techniques to overcome this like
        • condensation-taking numerous historical charectors and condensing them into one, or taking numerous events and condesing them into one event
    • Brian Goldfarb-visual pedagogy-recoginize images bombard our mind everyday-
      • advocates students as media creators-
      • when students interact with images, film ,and video they begin an engagement process.
    • Toby Daspit-believes that popular culture has become a place where students question the world and act as agents in the world in order to change the world

      • the teachers struggled
    • Noel Gough -if teachers want to teach science well they should abandon textbooks and use comics, a popular cultural source-text books do not cover the last hundred years like comics do?
    • These new ideas do not always work out, and the prized tenure is sometimes denied.
    • Greg Dimitriadis-studies african american youth in a small midwest urban setting.

  • Future of Cultural Studeis
    • scholars will have start acknoledging the impact of pop culture in their research
    • violence on tv does not create violent people, it can fuel the creative faculties of a distubed young person, but focusing onhwat influences the imagination does not address what triggers a person to act violently.
    • a healhty approach would develop a pedagogy that utilizes the power of popuar culture in order to enhance democracy
