Buckingham ch.5 Classroom Strategies

Look at 6 teaching techniques
  • existing knowledge for that which needs to be taught
  1. Textual Analysis
    • focuses in great detail on a single text, with close attentino to detail and rigorous questioning
    • students need to provide evidence for their views
    • take something famililar and look very close at it
    • analyze visual and audio text like litarature
    • HOW
      • semiotics, 3 stages
      • Description-identify all they can hear and see
        • close eyes and just listen
        • close ear and just wach
      • Meaning-what does text remind you of
        • commutation, how would the interpretation change if an element was changed, if a different character or music were used
      • Judgments-what values and claims is the ad arguing
        • is the argument effective or did it fail and how
    • meanings are not always universal
    • goal is not agreement but of systematic and rigorous analysis
    • it needs to be applied to real texts in real contexts, and explored in practical ways
  2. Contextual Analysis
    • textual analysis removes text from context-close attetnion to context enables usto understand the connections between media language and production and audience
    • technique-focus on a piece of text you would usually ignore***
      •  Opening scene of a tv show cna show a lot of the assumptions made by producers about their audience-this is good when used to contrast say two different films potraying the same idea in different ways, students can look to see who produced and disributed it, or how two tv shows about the same thing are aimed at two different audiences**
    • How was a text marketed and distrubted to audiences.
      • looking at tv listings, magazines, ads, promotional web sites,
      • evaluate the material looking at the claims and methods used to promote it
      • how is one film marketed in two different countries
    • How was the text recieved
      • find data on tv ratings, box office sales, and reviews
      • was the advertising effective at reaching its audience
      • also think how this information is gathered
    • Music industry
      • students begin to study cd covers, poster, and ads, than move on to look at other merchandising
      • a band seeking to widen its audience might show signs of this on their album covers from one album to the next
      • shows that marketing and ormotino are crusiall impotant aspects of the wasy in which texts find audiences.
      • yet to show it is not a conspiracy to brian wash audience we must also look at failde marketing and promotional compaigns
  3. Case Studies
    • in depth research into a media topic
    • simplist, focuses on the production, marketing and consumption of a particular text.
      • launch of something new, film, tv show, magazine
    • cross media investigation of an issue
      • look at say animals in advertising-or the media coverage of a particular event
    • investigating media audiences
      • develop and administer questionairres looking at patterns of media use
      • investigate a single media compnay
    • so if you were to take a tv for example, you
      • watch the show
      • analyze parts of the show
      • look at how other media cover the show-tv-magazines-internet
      • how does the tv show itself promote and publicise the show
      • students will develop research skills
      • might be easy to find information but harder to judge its authenticity
