Buckingham Chaptor 4 Defining the Field

  • q4 key concep
    • production
    • language
    • representation
    • audience
  • Production
    • most media are produced by groups for commercial profit-what economic interests are at stake-how to profit off that-global scale,
    • global vs local relationship
    • you can look at case studies, of lage companies,
    • or compare large companies to small companies
    • have students find who owns their favorite publications
    • the students will confront all these questions and more if they are tasked with making their own product
  • Language
    • each media has its own language to create meanin
    • paradigmatic (selecting from a range of possible elements) vs syntagmatic (putting the elements together in a sequence)
    • it involved making the familiar strange by looking in detail how text are composed and put together, for ex. you can physically deconstruct an image or breaking it down to its component parts
    • comparison-can identify shared conventions, and patterns
    • production also more insight than just studying.
  • Representation
    •  production involves selecting and combining incidents, combining events into stories, and creating characters.
    • bound to be biased yet we bring our own biased into interpreting it
    • we can still learn something even when we know it is fantasy
    • students can easily find the biased of a newspaper, by looking at the editorial section but it is harder to see that biased in the selection of stories and treatment, in words and images
      • comparison between different newspapers is a good technique**
    • stereotyping-
    • production-can help understanding if students are asked to produce a story about a familiar event aimed at two different audiences
  • Audiences
    • seen as gullible and easily influenced, especially kids-yet this is not what research shows
    • hard to show how somethings become popular and some dont
    • studying adiences means
      • looking at how they are targeted and measured
      • looking at how media are circulated and distributed
      • looking at the different ways social groups and individuals, use, interpret, and respond to media
    • a study of how the media industries operate-for example, how are telivision audiences and newspaper readers measured, and how is this used for advertising rates
    • how are different social groups reached, by magazine covers for ex.
    • how are fans cultivated
    • students should keep media diaries-compare with peers
    • record use of media in household-compare with peers
  • Concepts in Practice
    • each concepts is a point of entry into media education that evokes the others.
    • can be applied to both creative activities(photographing) and analytical (studying advertising)
  • Example 1 Teaching the simpsons
    • using a tv programm as a case study
    • Activities;
      • 1. Watch title sequence closely, noting key elements. Move into group discussion. Than have student write up wha they learned, how the intro sets up expectations
      • 2.Student given history of family situation comedy. They

  • Aims
    • most of the work is deductive rather than inductive .
    • its about students reaching their own conclusions instead of pointing them to one direction
  • Curriculum Planning
    • touch on all four concepts, some more than others, than unify them in a final project
    • anyone of the concepts surves as a way into the others
  • Pedegogy
    • individual, group, and whole class work
    • all units start with assumption that the student has knowledge they bring to the table
    • bu there is knowlegde the student does not have
