Democratizing the classroom for the Digital Native Student

  • *Wider move to DEMOCRATIZE, to buildt connections between the cultures of the school and those of the home and the peer group.  Teachers had starting working with the cultures the students brought to the classroom, instead of imposing the high culture on the students. This was a direct challenge to the elitism of established litarary culture.
This idea of democratizing the education system was brought up in our last class with the ideas of the Digital Native and Digital Immigrant. Where it was discussed that a new form of education was needed to reach a new type of student, a Digital immigrant.  A student who has grown up immersed in a digital media world. Who's baby sitter is the tv or dvd. This student has an internet ready smart phone by 1st grade. They facebook they twitter, they text photo's. And these students are bored with traditional forms of education that places the teacher in front of the room lecturing and the places the student in a desk taking notes. The Digital Native students want to use the new forms of media in the classroom. They want to bring there cutlure from outside the classroom into the classroom. But the teachers, Digital Immigrants need to catch up with the technology and learn how to do that.
