- a flood of new knowledge like new continents planets and organisms and peopels upset the cosmic order on a grand scale
- scientism, the only way toward truth, through verifiable testing
- science was studied by religious people, but eventually science began to chip away at what had once been a intergrated way of knowing about the world
- science did not discredit other ideas but submerged them.
- often seen as the most unclouded view of the truth
Contagious Folly by Terry Castle
- reality is a subjective characterization of things as they are.
- And what is the role of evidence in securing how we have come to understand reality?
- ? In other words, does the system you use to investigate actually succeed in measuring or describing what you set out to investigate?
- triangulation
- Elliot Eisner (1998) suggested that evidence that requires some interpretation is shored up by three key dimensions: 1) structural corroboration--when multiple types of data work to confirm or disconfirm interpretation (means, motive, opportunity of the suspect, forensics, and testimony of the arresting officers might provide this kind of corroboration); 2) consensual validity: agreement among competent others that description, interpretation, and evaluation of the evidence is correct (this is the expert testimony, such as a DNA expert or psychiatrist); and 3) referential adequacy..."An educational critic's work is referentially adequate when readers are able to see what they would have missed without the critic's observation..."
- If one man sees a ghost, he is dillusional, but what if two men see it together, can their share disillusion?
- How does an idea spread? Resulting in group consciousness
- Lets look at the case of the ghosts of versailles from 1911, two women saw the ghost of marie antoinete and thoguht they were transported back in time, and wrote about it
- they investigated the antionette and discovered that many things that happened to her before she was imprisioned, these two women witnessed, when they shared it they were told more evidence was needed.
- They did more research and published their findings, and found the dates of clothes and items on the property can only date back to the time of antionette.
- The attacks began to flow on once the book was read
- the case stirred long after the two women who wrote the book passed away
- the critics could attack the women, as it was odd back than for two women to live together like partners, but few could attack the fact that both ladies saw something odd
- there was teh idea of folie e duex, delusion spreading, form one crazy to a second, uneducated perosn, over time, but how come delusion would not spread in psych ward, to the doctors and patients.
